What happened this month
June 2026 was a bad month across the board: yellow and red grid alerts in May pushed wholesale spot market (WESM) prices up sharply, and a weaker peso raised imported fuel costs. Utilities buying a bigger share of their power from the spot market took the biggest hits — Davao Light (+₱1.95/kWh) and MORE Power (+₱2.04/kWh) — while Meralco's larger contracted supply cushioned its increase to +₱0.15/kWh. Cebu's VECO rose ₱0.86/kWh to a year-high ₱13.74.

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch to a cheaper electricity provider?
For homes, no — each distribution utility holds an exclusive franchise for its area, so your address decides your provider. Retail choice (RCOA) only applies to large "contestable" customers with demand of 500 kW and up. What you can control is consumption, and — increasingly — generating your own daytime power with rooftop solar.
Why do rates differ so much between cities?
Each utility buys power under its own contracts and exposure to the wholesale spot market (WESM), and passes generation costs through at cost. In June 2026, utilities heavily exposed to WESM (where prices more than doubled after grid alerts) saw the sharpest jumps — Davao Light rose ₱1.95/kWh and MORE Power ₱2.04/kWh in one month.
