What's a Normal Electric Bill in the Philippines?
“Normal ba ‘to?” — usually asked while holding a September bill at arm’s length. Here’s the honest benchmark table at the current Meralco rate (₱14.74/kWh, September 2026), and more usefully, how to compute what your normal should be.
| Household | Typical usage | Bill |
|---|---|---|
| Studio or bedspace: fan, lights, small ref, gadgets | 80–120 kWh | ₱1,179–₱1,769 |
| Small family, no aircon | 150–220 kWh | ₱2,211–₱3,243 |
| Family, one aircon nightly | 300–400 kWh | ₱4,423–₱5,897 |
| Family, two aircons or WFH | 500–700 kWh | ₱7,371–₱10,320 |
| Large home, daytime aircon | 800+ kWh | ₱11,794+ |
Meralco’s official “typical household” is 200 kWh — ₱2,948 at today’s rate. If your bill jumped but your habits didn’t, check this month’s rate movement before interrogating the family: rates climbed ₱0.26/kWh between June and September, no aircon required.
Same house, different bill — why?
Two identical townhouses can be ₱4,000 apart every month. The culprits, in the order we’d check them: aircon hours and whether it’s an inverter (that alone is ₱1,415/month), the age and type of the ref, water heating habits, and the silent 24/7 crowd — the second ref, the old freezer, the desktop that never sleeps.
Predict next month’s bill before Meralco does
Rebuild your bill from parts in the appliance electricity calculator: each appliance, honest hours, current rate. Compare the computed total against your actual bill. Within 15%? You understand your house. Off by more? Something is drawing more than its typical value — aging door gaskets and non-inverter compressors are the usual suspects, and a ₱500 plug-in meter will name the guilty party.
If the number genuinely hurts
Skip the hundred small habits; two structural moves beat them all. Swap the biggest non-inverter loads when they die (not before — the savings rarely justify junking a working unit). And if your bill is ₱5,000-plus or your usage is daytime-heavy, run the solar sizing math once. At current rates and 2026 hardware prices, payback is around three years — the arithmetic has never been this friendly, which is exactly why your subdivision keeps sprouting panels.
